Four Things To Ask Before Choosing A Preschool For Your Young Child

When you and your spouse have decide that your young child is ready to begin their educational experience, a preschool is the first place you'll go. However, with all the different kinds of programs these days, it's not always easy to choose a school that will prepare your child for the school years to come. Asking these preschool related questions can help you narrow in on a school that will be enjoyable and good for your child's development.
What is Your Schedule Like?
A challenge for many children starting preschool is that things are done in a different way than they may be used to. For example, naptime may come after lunch, when your child may not be used to napping in the afternoon at all. Finding out about the schedule as soon as you can will help you make adjustments so that the schedule isn't jarring for your child when they begin their school experience.
What is the Teacher to Student Ratio?
It's easy to imagine that every preschool adequately staffs their classrooms, but it's smart to find out whether there will be enough adult supervision for your child and the other children in the room with them. Be sure that the ratio is rather low so that your child gets as much attention as possible.
How is Discipline Handled?
It's wise to ask about discipline before your child attends any preschool. Ask about timeouts and other methods of correction that a school might use. Even if you expect your child to be perfectly behaved, it's worth knowing now what they would be in for if a teacher or staff member has a disciplinary moment with them.
What are Your Values and Principles?
It is especially important to talk with staff at any preschool about overriding principles and values that they have so that you know if they are in agreement with your family's own values. For example, if you're an atheist, you may prefer that a school doesn't start every meal with a blessing. Asking about these things before your child starts is a way to make sure that you don't run into any issues while they are a student there.
